HMH

“Aligned with the NYC Reads initiative, PS 45Q has fully transitioned to HMH Into Reading and HMH Into Writing across grades K–5, ensuring that every student builds a strong foundation in literacy. Instruction emphasizes phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, fluency, and comprehension, providing students with the skills they need to become confident, capable readers. Grounded in the Next Generation Learning Standards, lessons invite students to explore a diverse range of texts that promote critical thinking, discussion, and analysis of themes, topics, and ideas. Through structured writing units, students learn to craft narratives, informative pieces, and opinion essays using evidence and voice. Together, these programs strengthen our commitment to teaching the whole child—fostering curiosity, creativity, and communication—while ensuring all PS 45Q students engage deeply with reading and writing every day

Fundations

Fundations is a structured literacy program by Wilson Language Training designed for K-3 students. It focuses on phonics, spelling, handwriting, and reading comprehension using a multisensory approach. Fundations is widely used in schools to build strong foundational literacy skills, particularly for early readers and students with learning differences like dyslexia.

HMH & Fundations

Why HMH & Fundations? The NYC Reads initiative has prompted districts to adopt a unified English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum. This strategic alignment fosters collaborative efforts and promotes the sharing of best practices in teaching foundational reading and writing skills across the city.
In alignment with this initiative, District 27, and consequently PS 45Q, has adopted the HMH (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) curriculum. HMH was selected for its comprehensive approach and strong emphasis on foundational literacy skills, which are better aligned with the principles of the Science of Reading (SOR). For grades K-2, foundational skills remain central to reading instruction within the HMH framework, which also provides engaging and complex fiction and non-fiction texts and concepts. This comprehensive approach aims to address and close achievement gaps among our students.
Why the Shift to Science of Reading (SOR)? To understand the rationale behind this shift, we encourage you to listen to the podcast series 'Sold a Story'.

Creative Curriculum

“Here at PS 45Q, we use the Creative Curriculum exclusively in our 3K and Pre-K classes to promote holistic child development through project-based, hands-on learning that builds your child's academic, social, and emotional skills simultaneously. Our program develops core cognitive abilities like problem-solving and critical thinking while providing daily opportunities to strengthen literacy (including phonological awareness and letter knowledge) and math skills through both direct instruction and child-led activities, all aligned with New York State Common Core standards. We prioritize social-emotional development, helping children manage their feelings, build self-confidence, self-control, and empathy, while learning to relate positively to teachers and peers. By emphasizing play as a fundamental vehicle for learning, we encourage curiosity and foster a lifelong love of learning while developing children across multiple domains—cognitive, social/emotional, physical, and language—rather than focusing on just one area. Our teachers tailor lessons to individual student needs and interests through in-depth projects involving real-world scenarios that seamlessly integrate different subjects. The Creative Curriculum also actively involves families in the learning process, promoting strong school-home connections while respecting each child's individual differences and cultural background.”

ENL

“The English as a New Language (ENL) Program at PS 45Q ensures that all Multilingual Learners receive high-quality instruction that builds both language and academic skills. Grounded in the Keys to Advance Language and Literacy Development, lessons intentionally support growth in listening, speaking, reading, and writing through scaffolded discussion, visual supports, and Total Physical Response strategies that honor diverse learning styles. To supplement our ENL instruction, we are excited to use Imagine Language & Literacy—a unique program that helps children develop English language and reading skills simultaneously. It provides clear, step-by-step lessons that build confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, offering personalized learning pathways that keep students engaged and making progress. Through collaboration among ENL and classroom teachers, PS 45Q students gain the confidence, fluency, and comprehension skills needed to express their ideas and succeed across all subjects.

Math curriculum

Our math curriculum is all about building knowledge - not just skills. Building deep, lasting understanding rather than just memorizing. Knowledge about the real world, rather than hypothetical scenarios. Knowledge through consistent core skill development, rather than reinventing the wheel with each lesson. And the knowledge that builds upon itself for richer connections throughout the learning process. Every child has unlimited potential and is capable of greatness.

history curriculum

“The Passport to Social Studies curriculum, developed by the NYCDOE, provides PS 45Q students with an inquiry-based approach that builds critical thinking, literacy, and civic understanding. Lessons are designed to help students “think like historians” by analyzing primary sources, developing evidence-based arguments, and engaging in rich discussions—skills that directly support reading and writing growth. For our multilingual learners, Passport integrates vocabulary, speaking, and comprehension practice within meaningful content, aligning perfectly with our focus on language development. Its culturally responsive materials reflect the diversity of Queens, helping students see their own identities in history and fostering inclusivity. The structured lesson guides also support co-teaching and ICT settings by offering built-in scaffolds and differentiation opportunities. Overall, Passport strengthens social studies instruction while advancing literacy, language, and critical thinking—empowering PS 45Q students to connect their learning to the world around them.

Enrichment Programs

National Dance Institute

“For over 10 years, PS 45Q has proudly partnered with the National Dance Institute (NDI) to bring high-quality dance education and arts enrichment to our students. Founded by former New York City Ballet principal Jacques d’Amboise, NDI’s mission is to engage all children in the joy of movement, music, and creative expression. Through dynamic residencies, PS 45Q students learn teamwork, discipline, and confidence while exploring cultures, themes, and stories through dance. Each year culminates in an energetic performance that showcases their growth and spirit. Our long-standing partnership with NDI reflects PS 45Q’s deep commitment to arts equity and whole-child development, ensuring that every child—regardless of background or ability—experiences the transformative power of the performing arts.”

Studio In Schools

“Since 2014, PS 45Q has proudly partnered with Studio in a School, an acclaimed organization that brings professional artists into classrooms to nurture creativity, artistic skill, and self-expression. For over a decade, this partnership has provided our students with hands-on opportunities to explore drawing, painting, and mixed media while connecting art to academic learning and personal experiences. Through Studio in a School’s engaging residencies, students learn to observe closely, think critically, and express their unique perspectives. Each year, their work is celebrated through school exhibitions and select pieces are chosen for display at Studio in a School’s professional art gallery in Manhattan, where our young artists’ talents are showcased alongside peers from across New York City. This enduring collaboration continues to strengthen PS 45Q’s commitment to arts education, creativity, and access for all students.”

Theatre

“Each year, the PS 45Q Theater Program brings together students, teachers, and the arts community for a dazzling, schoolwide production that celebrates creativity, collaboration, and performance. This annual joint arts project showcases our students’ talent through full-scale Disney musical productions, complete with acting, singing, dancing, set design, and technical stagecraft. In 2025, our young performers enchanted audiences with Beauty and the Beast, and preparations are already underway for next year’s production of Aladdin. Special thanks to Ms. Simon, Ms. Duggan, and Ms. Mazdra, whose tireless dedication and artistic vision have transformed the PS 45Q auditorium into a Broadway-quality performance space. Through their leadership, students gain confidence, teamwork, and a lifelong appreciation for the performing arts—making the PS 45Q Theater Program a highlight of our school year.

Music

“The PS 45Q Music Program embodies our commitment to educating the whole child through rhythm, movement, and creative expression. Rooted in a curriculum that honors multiple learning styles and Total Physical Response (TPR), students experience music through listening, performing, composing, and collaboration. Our approach blends vocal, instrumental, and percussion study—allowing every child to find their voice and their beat. This year, the program reached a milestone with a record performance at Carnegie Hall, where our student musicians proudly represented PS 45Q on one of the world’s most prestigious stages. Band and percussion remain at the heart of our instruction, fostering discipline, teamwork, and joy in learning Through music, students not only strengthen academic and social-emotional skills but also discover the power of creativity and community—core values that define the PS 45Q arts experience.”
